You must take an approved pre-filing credit counseling course before you file bankruptcy. Your Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy case will be dismissed (ended) by the court if you fail to take your pre-filing bankruptcy course and obtain your certificate at least one day before your bankruptcy case.
It is also important to make sure that the pre-filing credit counseling course has been approved by the Bankruptcy Administrator or the course may not count and your case could still be dismissed. For a complete list of approved pre-filing credit counseling courses go to the U.S. Bankruptcy Administrator.
